The Characters: Matt is the first (and possibly only) friend Stefan makes when he arrives in Fell's Church. The books give the impression that Stefan is trying to keep humans at arms length to keep them safe from his vampire nature, yet Stefan can't help being won over by Matt's natural charm and kindness. Despite discovering that Stefan is a vampire, Matt comes around to Stefan's side in the end and becomes his best friend.
